Anwen James

Anwen’s horsemanship journey started around the age of six when she first rode one of her grandma’s horses. She started horseback riding lessons and from then on, was obsessed. She was 10 years old when she got to start her first horse, Flicka, who she still has to this day.

As a teenager, Anwen learned everything she could about horses. She became a working student at a hunter jumper barn, joined an IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) team showing horses she’d never met before in hunt seat equitation, and attended all the clinics and equine events that she could.

At 16, Anwen moved from the Central California coast, to Oregon to volunteer at a horse rescue. There she worked with many horses, from untouched mustangs, to colts, to trail and pack horses. Having always been inspired by Buck Brannaman, she started to narrow down her focus and seek a deep dive into those methods.

Throughout college, she was employed at various barns and worked any horse she could get her hands on, until she was fortunate enough to have her wishes granted with a job at Double Rafter C, a ranch where she could finally delve into the intricacies of horsemanship. Her time there was invaluable and taught her so much about horsemanship and the professional side of the equine industry.

She finally landed at Reese Creek Ranch in 2022 where she started training outside horses full time. Anwen enjoys riding and training both english and western horses and believes in applying quality horsemanship to her work regardless of the discipline.

Approach

Anwen prioritizes quality in her work by breaking the process down into small enough steps that the horse builds confidence and understanding along the way. This builds a solid foundation in the horse. She encourages clients to participate in the process to help maintain progress as they transition toward being their horse’s primary handler.

Groundwork

Anwen is a firm believer in thoroughly preparing a horse on the ground prior to riding. All horses in training receive extensive groundwork.

Owner Involvement

Anwen includes two lessons a month in her training prices to encourage owners to learn to communicate better with their horses and continue progressing once the horse returns home.
